can be rephrased into k(1+k+k^2)<0, here 1+k+k^2 is always +ve, so it all comes down to k,
statement 1 doesn't say anything about k being - ve of +ve, so insufficient, statement 2 however tells us that k is - ve, so sufficient, Ans B
