Hi, this was my solution and I was wondering why it is not correct:
Before hike : 10 cups
After hike : 1 cup
- after hike, he had to drink 3 cups so we know that he had 4 cups at the 5 hour mark.
@5 hour mark : 4 cups
Therefore, for the first 5 hours, the total rate of water loss is 6/5 (10 - 4 cups per 5 miles)
Since we know that water is leaking at 1 cup per hour and he finished the hike in 2 hours,
1cup/hr * 2hrs/6miles = 1/3 (1 cup per 3 miles) --> rate of water leak.
To solve the amount of water he drank per mile during the 5 hour span:
6/5 = 1/3 + x
x = 15/15 = 1
