In a group consisting of boys and girls, some are vegetarians while others are not. Among the vegetarians, 40% are boys, and among the non-vegetarians, 70% are boys. If girls constitute 40% of the total group, what percentage of the group are vegetarians?

A. 20%
B. 33 1/3%
C. 50%
D. 60%
E. 662/3%

Let's assume that
  • the number of vegetarians in the group =\(V\)
  • the number of vegetarians in the group =\(N\)

We can plot the information on a 2 * 2 matrix as shownbelow

Given: If girls constitute 40% of the totalgroup

Therefore boys constitute 60% of the total group

Number of boys =\(\frac{60}{100} (V+N)\)

From the table, number of boys =\((\frac{40}{100} V +\frac{70}{100}N)\)

Therefore

\((\frac{40}{100} V +\frac{70}{100} N) =\frac{60}{100} (V+N)\)

\(\frac{40}{100} V +\frac{70}{100} N =\frac{60}{100} V+\frac{60}{100} N\)

\( 2V =N\)

Question

\(\frac{ V}{V+N} * 100\) =?

\(\frac{ V}{V+2V} * 100 = 33.33\)%
