IMO. if we look closely at the sentence, the sentence starts with "As the baby emerges" the verb "emerges" here denotes as if the baby emerges by its own, whereas I believe its nonsensical as we all know a baby emerging from a womb is process conducted by surgeons/doctors. so the word emerging as an adjective retains the intended meaning.
